Manila: The Philippines and India are actively working on arranging a state visit by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to India, aiming to coincide with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
According to Philippines News Agency, Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo revealed during a television interview in India that the two countries are hopeful to organize the visit as soon as possible within this year. Both sides are eager to see several agreements and “concrete deliverables” signed during this potential visit. Manalo mentioned that discussions regarding the visit have been ongoing, with further talks taking place during his meeting with Indian Minister of External Affairs Jaishankar at the Raisina Dialogue held in India from March 17 to 19.
While details of the bilateral agreements remain undisclosed, Manalo emphasized the focus on enhancing cooperation in areas such as maritime activities. Both countries are exploring the possibility of conducting joint patrol exercises and bolstering maritime safety collaboration. Manalo highlighted the importance of greater Coast Guard cooperation in addressing regional issues like maintaining peace, order, and combating piracy or trafficking.
The milestone celebration of 75 years of diplomatic relations between India and the Philippines took place on November 16, 2024. The Philippine Embassy in India noted the deepening mutual trust and expanding cooperation between the two countries, as evidenced by the increasing high-level interactions, political dialogues, record bilateral trade, growing foreign direct investment, and new developments in defense cooperation.
