Gatchalian Backs NBI Probe on Vloggers Spreading Fake News

Manila: Senator Sherwin Gatchalian on Thursday expressed support for the National Bureau of Investigation’s (NBI) initiative to investigate vloggers and online trolls disseminating false information on social media platforms. “With more people relying on social media for information, the proliferation of fake news has increased over the years, necessitating government intervention,” Gatchalian said in a statement. “I fully support the NBI’s decision to probe vloggers peddling fake news.”

According to Philippines News Agency, spreading disinformation poses a serious threat to public trust and unity. Gatchalian urged the NBI to file appropriate charges against individuals who deliberately spread false information, particularly content that polarizes public opinion and undermines democratic processes.

Last week, NBI Director Jaime Santiago said online attacks against individuals have worsened, prompting the agency’s cybercrime unit to take action. Santiago noted that the NBI would soon file cases against identified individuals, including Maharlika, a US-based vlogger, who could face charges for violating the anti-cybercrime law and inciting to sedition.

He also cited social media posts linked to former presidential spokesperson Harry Roque encouraging a “people power” movement. Santiago pointed out that while freedom of speech and expression are respected, these do not grant individuals the right to fabricate stories that create unrest.
