Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has announced that the Philippines’ upcoming chairship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2026 is set to deliver significant benefits for the country. He emphasized the potential for expanding partnerships and advancing the Philippines’ stance on several regional issues.
According to Philippines News Agency, during a Kapihan with the Media, Marcos expressed that Manila is gearing up to strategically focus on key elements that ASEAN should prioritize in the coming year. He highlighted the importance of the Code of Conduct (COC) negotiations with China, noting that while it may not be a priority for other member states, it is crucial for the Philippines. He stressed the opportunity to promote and highlight this issue during the chairship.
Marcos acknowledged the prolonged COC negotiations between China and ASEAN, which have been ongoing for over a decade. However, he expressed optimism about finalizing the agreement by 2026, despite the challenges. Marcos remained confident about meeting the deadline, stating his inherent optimism and the necessity to move forward and find better solutions.
He emphasized the Philippines’ commitment, alongside China and other ASEAN nations, to work diligently towards finalizing the pact as soon as possible. Beyond managing tensions in the crucial sea lane, Marcos mentioned that the ASEAN hosting will foster closer ties with ASEAN dialogue partners.
Marcos reflected on the symbolic passing of the gavel, marking the Philippines’ assumption of ASEAN chairship. He acknowledged the responsibility it entails but also recognized the vast opportunities it presents for strengthening partnerships with ASEAN member states and global allies. He expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunities ahead and aligned the Philippines’ aspirations with those of other ASEAN member states.
