Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Friday hailed the partnership between Globe Telecom and Starlink as a major step toward expanding digital access across the Philippines, saying the collaboration will bring connectivity to even the most remote communities. During the ceremonial signing of the memorandum of agreement between Globe and Starlink at the Globe Tower in Taguig City, Marcos said the initiative dubbed the 'Next Generation Connectivity: Every Filipino Connected' is proof of a shared commitment to promoting digital inclusion.
According to Philippines News Agency, this partnership of Globe and Starlink complements the government's efforts to digitalize systems, innovate learning platforms, and support countryside development. Marcos emphasized that this tie-up is a significant step towards a 'more progressive, connected, and equitable' Philippines. The collaboration introduces Starlink's Direct-to-Cell (DTC) service to the country, offering satellite-powered mobile connectivity on smartphones without additional hardware or special applications.
Users will be able to access messaging and basic data even in areas without cell sites, which is particularly beneficial during disasters when conventional networks may fail. Marcos highlighted that from the outset, the administration has been clear about the digital, inclusive future of the Philippines. He noted the service's potential to bridge gaps during emergencies, providing a crucial link for isolated areas.
Marcos stated that the initiative complements other government programs aimed at strengthening the country's digital infrastructure, such as the National Fiber Backbone and the Free Wi-Fi for All program. These programs aim to provide stable and accessible internet in schools, public spaces, and government offices. Digital inclusion, he emphasized, is essential for connectivity, education, business, and countryside development.
He acknowledged the contributions of Globe, a key player in the Philippines' digital landscape for nearly a century, and Starlink and SpaceX for bringing advanced satellite technology to the country. Marcos underscored that progress must serve the people, demonstrating how the government and private sector can broaden possibilities for a more connected Philippines.
Developed by SpaceX's Starlink division, DTC is a service enabling unmodified LTE (Long-Term Evolution) phones to connect directly to low-Earth orbit satellites. This service allows for continuous voice, text, and data services without requiring users to install special hardware or applications. Consequently, DTC can expand mobile network coverage to previously underserved areas, including mountainous terrains, islands, and remote rural communities.
