Palace Announces Limited Access on DPWH Coastal Road in Davao City

Davao city: Malaca±ang announced an initial agreement allowing motorists access to the 1.3-km Bucana Bridge in Davao City daily from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Palace Press Officer Claire Castro detailed the plan, stating that two lanes will be passable during these hours.

According to Philippines News Agency, the statement followed Acting Davao City Mayor Sebastian Duterte’s criticism of the “premature” opening of Davao City Coastal Road Segment B. Duterte expressed concerns about public safety, highlighting the absence of streetlights, traffic signs, and other safety measures on the newly opened section.

Castro called for cooperation from Davao City’s local government unit (LGU) to ensure smooth traffic flow and safety. She mentioned that the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) plans to complete the installation of solar lights along the entire stretch within two to three days, enabling safe nighttime usage.

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. conducted an inspection of the Bucana Bridge on December 4, with the bridge opening to motorists on December 15 to alleviate traffic congestion, particularly during the holiday season. As part of the broader Davao City Bypass project, the Bucana Bridge is anticipated to reduce travel time from nearly two hours to just 20-25 minutes once fully operational.

The 480-meter bridge in the Bucana area, funded by a Chinese grant, is set to become a significant traffic decongestion project for Davao City.
