Over 250 killed as earthquake jolts Afghanistan

A deadly earthquake has killed 255 people in eastern Afghanistan, official media said Wednesday.

The magnitude 5.9 tremor shook parts of Barmala, Ziruk, Naka and Gayan districts of Paktika province bordering Pakistan, state-run Bakhtar News Agency reported, adding that 155 people were also wounded.

Afghan officials said the death toll could rise further without urgent emergency assistance.
