Baguio city: More than 1,000 individuals have registered as tutors to support the implementation of the Academic Recovery and Accessible Learning (ARAL) Act in Baguio City, a Department of Education (DepEd) official announced. Of the 1,079 registered tutors, 43 volunteers are from outside DepEd, as stated by Baguio City Schools Division superintendent Dr. Soraya Faculo.
According to Philippines News Agency, some of the non-DepEd tutors include retired professional teachers, pre-service teachers, non-licensed education graduates, and non-education college graduates. The ARAL Program Act (Republic Act 12028), enacted in October 2024, serves as a national intervention to help students catch up and regain foundational skills in reading, mathematics, and science. Dr. Faculo explained that the program aims to identify students’ learning deficiencies and provide them with tutors to help cope with their current grade levels.
The tutors, who underwent training, will be compensated using DepEd funds. Faculo highlighted that approximately 14,069 learners from Grades 1 to 10 require additional support in reading and comprehension. The ARAL Act provides remediation, including tutorials, coaching, or mentoring, conducted after school, on weekends, or during summer breaks, along with other flexible times during the school year.
Dr. Estela Cari±o, DepEd-Cordillera Administrative Region director, emphasized that this is a national program aimed at helping learners who faced challenges during the absence of face-to-face classes amid the pandemic. Students will be regularly assessed to monitor their progress, remaining in the program until they achieve their appropriate learning levels.
