LEGAZPI CITY: At least 88 local government units (LGUs) in the Bicol Region were honored with the prestigious Gawad KALASAG award for their outstanding efforts in disaster risk reduction management (DRRM) and humanitarian assistance. The award ceremony, held at the Oriental Hotel, highlighted the proactive measures taken by these LGUs to enhance community resilience against disasters.
According to Philippines News Agency, Claudio Yucot, the regional director of the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) in Bicol, emphasized the significance of the Gawad KALASAG as both a symbol of resilience and a platform showcasing the substantial contributions made by stakeholders in disaster preparedness. He noted that the award program continuously evaluates and refines strategies to address community vulnerabilities.
Yucot remarked that the recognition of 88 LGUs in 2024, up from 55 in 2023 and 12 in 2022, reflects the growing determination and progress in disaster preparedness. The provincial governments of Camarines Norte, C
amarines Sur, Masbate, and Sorsogon were distinguished as “Beyond Compliant,” meaning they exceeded the required DRRM plans and programs.
Several cities and municipalities in the Bicol region received accolades, including Sorsogon City, Masbate City, Iriga City, and Legazpi City, among others. Additionally, the provinces of Albay and Catanduanes, along with the independent city of Naga, achieved the status of “Fully Compliant.”
The Gawad KALASAG, established in 1998, annually honors LGUs and stakeholders for promoting and implementing programs related to DRRM, climate change adaptation, and humanitarian assistance.
