Manila: Nine major projects of Manila Electric Company (Meralco) were energized in the second quarter of this year, boosting capacity in Metro Manila and the provinces of Bulacan, Laguna, and Quezon. The Manuel V. Pangilinan-led listed firm on Wednesday said these projects increased capacity in the covered areas by around 450 megavolt-amperes (MVA).
According to Philippines News Agency, one of these projects is the ASEANA 115 kilovolt (kV) – 34.5 kV Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) Substation in Para±aque City, which caters to businesses in ASEANA 3, Ayala Malls Manila Bay, Bayprime Hotel, Seda Manila Bay, Bayprime Hotel, and Uni-Asia International Prime Holdings Inc. Capacities of both the Bridgetowne 115 kV – 34.5 kV GIS in Pasig City, which caters to customers and Pasig City and Quezon City; and the 115 kV – 34.5 kV GIS substation in Makati City, were expanded.
The capacity of the Tayabas Power Transformer was also expanded from 100 MVA to 300 MVA to support load growth in parts of Quezon and Laguna. Five other projects, in turn, involved the improvement of the sub-transmission system backbone. These covered the Dila-Real 115 kV line, bolstering power reliability for customers in Laguna, including Calamba, Los Ba±os, Bay, Pila, and Calauan; and the key transmission lines in Bulacan, namely the Malolos-Tabang and Malolos-Calumpit 69 kV lines, for the Department of Transportation’s flagship North-South Commuter Railway project.
Meralco also launched its initial fully indoor GIS switching station in Regalado, Quezon City, aimed to cater to customers in Quezon City and Caloocan City. It also enhanced the capacity of the Abubot Substation after the installation of three 115-kV circuit breakers and other associated equipment ‘to support commercial and healthcare customers in Dasmari±as, General Trias, and Imus.’
‘These projects are part of Meralco’s broader network enhancement strategy, ensuring that our infrastructure is future-ready to meet growing energy demand while improving operational flexibility and service reliability,’ Meralco First Vice President and head of Networks Froilan Savet said.
