Marcos Highlights Sports’ Role as PhilSports Complex Unveils Upgrades

Pasig city: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Wednesday spearheaded the relaunch of the newly renovated PhilSports Complex facilities, emphasizing the importance of a modern training environment as a crucial investment in athlete development and the strengthening of national character through sports.

According to Philippines News Agency, the refurbished complex now includes modernized athlete dormitories, a relocated National Sports Museum, a redesigned dining hall, and improved sports offices. This marks the most extensive upgrade to the complex since the 2019 Southeast Asian Games. The initiative, led by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) with support from the Office of the President and First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, aligns with the Philippines’ preparations to host several major international sports events.

In his speech, President Marcos highlighted sports’ unifying power and its role in instilling discipline, resilience, and teamwork among Filipino youth. He mentioned that sports bring pride to every Filipino, referencing notable athletes such as Manny Pacquiao, Hidilyn Diaz, and Caloy Yulo. He also reinforced the administration’s commitment to reviving physical education and competitive activities in schools.

Marcos stressed that national athletes should not rely solely on informal support from parents, coaches, and trainers, emphasizing the government’s responsibility in providing necessary support, including proper nutrition, comprehensive medical support, and top-tier preparation for international competition.

PSC Chairman Patrick Gregorio expressed gratitude to partner agencies, sports associations, and the private sector for their support in the comprehensive reconstruction efforts. These enhancements include waterproofing works, new CCTV systems, improved lighting, upgraded air-conditioning, and enhanced fire detection and alarm systems. The strength and conditioning gym also received new equipment for cardio, weight training, and functional training.

The newly relocated National Sports Museum within the complex continues to display memorabilia of past and present Filipino sports icons. The PhilSports Complex, an essential venue for local competitions and sports-related events, remains home to a large portion of the national training pool. President Marcos concluded by stating that the improved facilities will help athletes perform better in international competitions and continue to bring honor to the country.
