Sweden Partners with Philippine Mines for Zero-Injury Technology

Manila: Swedish Ambassador to the Philippines Anna Ferry announced that Sweden is introducing its advanced mining technologies to the Philippines in an effort to bolster safety and efficiency within the local mining industry. Ferry emphasized Sweden’s zero-tolerance policy for accidents, noting that the country hosts 13 mining companies that collaborate closely with equipment providers and researchers to develop safer, science-based technologies.

According to Philippines News Agency, Anna Ferry, along with Business Sweden, is participating in the 71st Philippine Mine Safety and Environment Association (PMSEA) annual conference. The conference is a five-day event where Sweden is showcasing its developed systems and equipment aimed at supporting safer mining operations. Ferry highlighted that Sweden’s mining sector-one of the most established in the European Union-has long been committed to enhancing worker safety and environmental protection through partnerships with industry, academia, government, and local communities.

As part of these efforts, Sweden has initiated a partnership with Apex Mining for a pilot project that introduces Swedish mining technologies to the Philippines. Louie Sarmiento, president and CEO of Apex Mining and PMSEA president, expressed the company’s intent to leverage Sweden’s expertise to modernize and strengthen safety standards across the industry. Sarmiento stated that Apex Mining has taken the lead in collaborating with Business Sweden and Swedish companies to implement smart technologies aimed at ensuring safe mining operations. He also mentioned that safety targets are monitored by the Mines and Geosciences Bureau, and that workers are incentivized for achieving safe man-hours.

Haiza Pigkaulan of Apex Mining elaborated on the collaboration’s initial focus on establishing underground internet connectivity. This development is expected to pave the way for digital solutions that enhance productivity and safety, especially in challenging environments where visibility and communication are limited. Pigkaulan remarked that embracing this technology is a significant step toward choosing digital solutions that enhance safety, productivity, and operations. Real-time information is anticipated to reduce equipment downtime and boost productivity, while companies are recognizing safety as a critical investment area, with costs varying based on how each firm prioritizes safety and operational efficiency.

The PMSEA conference is themed ‘Building Strategic Alliances for Progress.’
