Marcos Affirms Future of Philippines in Youth Leadership at TOYM Awards

Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has expressed confidence in the future of the Philippines, emphasizing that the nation is "in good hands" as the youth take on leadership roles with purpose. This statement was made during the 2025 Ten Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) Awards ceremony held at Malaca±ang Palace.

According to Philippines News Agency, Executive Secretary Ralph Recto delivered a message on behalf of President Marcos during the ceremony at Kalayaan Hall. Marcos highlighted that the awardees exemplify a new generation of leaders who are driven by service and purpose. He expressed his confidence in the nation's future, stating, "Through your work, and more importantly, the impact you have created, I am confident that the Philippines is in good hands."

Since its inception in 1959, the TOYM Awards have served as evidence that leadership and excellence transcend age. Marcos reiterated this sentiment, noting that the awards are a reminder that age is never a barrier to achieving excellence. The President acknowledged the contributions made by the awardees in fields such as law, environmental protection, science, and climate advocacy, recognizing their efforts in addressing both national and global challenges.

Among those commended were lawyer Raymond Baguilat, for his defense of indigenous peoples' rights and efforts to ensure their inclusion in legal and educational systems; Rafael Dionisio, for his work with Aeta communities in Zambales to restore forests and build sustainable livelihoods; and Dr. John Jamir Benzon Aruta, for pioneering research on the links between climate change and mental health, particularly in the Global South.

Marcos also recognized Dr. Deo Florence Onda, the first Filipino to reach the Emden Deep, the world's third deepest point, for his leadership in scientific expeditions in the West Philippine Sea and his contributions to research on marine plastic pollution and microbial ecology. "Each of you truly proves that leadership demands a deep sense of purpose," Marcos stated.

The President urged the awardees to continue leading with integrity and compassion, challenging young Filipinos to follow their example. He concluded by saying, "Excellence becomes possible when we choose to use our talents in the service of others."
