Manila: Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Wednesday conveyed his sympathies to the families of victims killed in the deadly 6.9 magnitude earthquake that struck Cebu on Tuesday. In a message of solidarity, the Malaysian leader emphasized Kuala Lumpur’s readiness to support Manila’s relief and recovery efforts.

According to Philippines News Agency, Prime Minister Anwar expressed his deep sadness over the devastating earthquake, highlighting the collective grief shared with the people of the Philippines. “The loss and hardship endured by so many families weigh heavily on us, and Malaysia mourns with the people of the Philippines in this time of grief,” he stated. Anwar further assured that Malaysia stands in full solidarity with the Philippines and is committed to supporting relief and recovery efforts, hoping for the resilience of the Filipino people to prevail during these challenging times.

In a separate statement, the United Nations Philippines extended its deepest sympathies to the bereaved families and expressed readiness to support the government’s quake response operations. The organization commended national and local authorities for their quick response and assured that they, along with the government and other partners, are assessing the impact and remain prepared to assist in response and recovery efforts.

The earthquake, which struck Bogo City, Cebu, at around 9:59 p.m. on September 30, resulted in over 60 reported deaths and numerous injuries. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council is in the process of validating casualty reports. In response to the crisis, Cebu Governor Pamela Baricuatro has appealed to the private sector and individuals for assistance in providing hot meals and ready-to-eat food to victims, particularly in northern Cebu. The entire province has been placed under a state of calamity.
