Marikina: The Land Transportation Office (LTO) on Tuesday revoked the driver’s license of the survivor involved in a ‘Superman’ motorcycle stunt along Marilaque (Marikina-Rizal-Laguna-Quezon) Highway that killed another rider and injured several bystanders in January.

According to Philippines News Agency, LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza II stated that Rico Akmad Buyawan was given an opportunity to explain his side during a hearing with the LTO. However, an investigation by the LTO-Calabarzon office found Buyawan guilty of reckless driving and operating a motor vehicle without authorization, leading to the recommendation to revoke his driver’s license.

Mendoza emphasized that holding a driver’s license is a privilege that carries the responsibility of observing road safety and being a responsible driver. He remarked, “This should serve as a lesson to all motorists, especially motorcycle riders, that public roads are not appropriate places for such activities.”

The incident took place in Barangay Cuyambay, Tanay, Rizal on January 26. A video that circulated widely on social media showed Buyawan and another rider, motovlogger John Louie Arguelles, performing a ‘Superman’ stunt, which resulted in Buyawan colliding with Arguelles. The collision led to Arguelles’ death and injuries to at least six bystanders.

In response to the incident, the LTO strengthened its road safety advocacy through the ‘Stop Road Crash’ campaign and organized a unity bike ride on Marilaque Highway. Several rider groups participated to express their commitment to enhancing road safety for all users.
