Manila: The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has modified 12 public utility vehicle (PUV) routes in Quezon City, Mandaluyong City, Rizal, and Surigao del Sur to create a more convenient experience for commuters.
According to Philippines News Agency, LTFRB Chair Vigor Mendoza II stated that the streamlining of these routes is part of the Public Transport Modernization Program (PTMP) led by the Department of Transportation (DOTr). This initiative aims to eliminate the need for commuters to switch vehicles multiple times, thereby simplifying their travel experience.
The adjusted routes include major paths such as Rodriguez, Rizal to Quezon Memorial Circle, and vice versa; Rodriguez, Rizal to Antipolo City, and vice versa; San Mateo, Rizal to Cubao, Quezon City via Marikina, and vice versa; Mandaluyong City Hall to One Ayala Terminal Hub; and Cantilan, Surigao del Sur to Surigao City via Bad-as Terminal, among others.
Hundreds of other PUV routes are under review with the goal of ensuring faster and more efficient commuting across the country. The LTFRB emphasizes that these modifications are part of broader efforts to modernize public transport, including a shift toward modern jeepneys.
Following the deadline for the extension of the PUV consolidation in 2024, the PTMP has moved towards route rationalization in coordination with local government units. To date, hundreds of new routes have been approved, with more under review, indicating progress in the PTMP.
The shift to modern jeepneys is being gradually implemented nationwide, reflecting the commitment to modernize public transport infrastructure. Mendoza affirmed that the PTMP is progressing well and the establishment of new routes is evidence of its success. The LTFRB remains dedicated to fully realizing the goals of the PTMP.
