Leptospirosis Cases in the Philippines Decline by 46% in September

Tunis:Leptospirosis cases in the Philippines saw a significant decline of 46 percent between September 10 and September 23, indicating a potential easing of the recent surge, According to Department of Health (DOH).

According to Philippines News Agency, the DOH's surveillance report as of October 7 recorded 1,814 cases during this two-week period, a decrease from the 3,340 cases reported from August 27 to September 9.

Despite this decline, the total number of cases reached 13,158 by October 7, representing a 48 percent increase from the 8,910 cases documented during the same timeframe in 2025. The regions under close watch for year-on-year increases include Soccsksargen, Central Visayas, Western Visayas, Cordillera Administrative Region, Negros Island Region, Bicol Region, and Cagayan Valley.

'The recent surveillance continues to indicate that the surge is easing with the remaining 13 P/HUCs (Provinces and Highly Urbanized Cities) across seven regions this week flagged for #leptospirosis,' the DOH said.

The case fatality rate has also improved, decreasing to 5.34 percent this year from 10.47 percent in 2025. The Department of Health emphasized that while there is a decline in cases, they will continue to actively monitor the situation to ensure that the downward trend persists.
