Tunis:Ilocos Region The Department of Agriculture (DA) in the Ilocos Region is implementing preparedness strategies to mitigate the potential effects of a "very strong" El Niño on agriculture in the area.
According to Philippines News Agency, DA project evaluation officer Milagros Dela Rosa highlighted several initiatives during a recent forum. These include the deployment of solar-powered irrigation systems and solar pumps to enhance irrigation and water management.
Additionally, the agency is engaged in the repair and rehabilitation of existing irrigation facilities and the assessment of irrigation systems to adjust water allocation and delivery schedules. The DA is distributing drought-tolerant and early maturing seeds, along with quality seeds, fertilizers, and biofertilizers, to support farmers.
The DA is also promoting the planting of short-maturing, less water-intensive crops such as mung beans, crop diversification, and adjusting planting calendars based on weather forecasts and water availability. Efforts are underway to strengthen early warning systems and climate risk assessments by monitoring weather forecasts, rainfall patterns, water availability, and crop conditions.
Moreover, advisories are issued to farmers and fisherfolk regarding planting schedules and suitable production practices. The DA has activated an El Niño Task Force to coordinate preparedness and response efforts with other agencies in affected areas.
