Legazpi City:Barangay Dapdap underscored the critical need for disaster resilience in communities and schools during the 2026 International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR) observed on Tuesday. The event, hosted by the Legazpi City government, featured an information caravan organized by the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) - Bicol to promote the Panatag Pilipinas 3.0 campaign.
According to Philippines News Agency, OCD-Bicol Director Bernardo Fortez Jr. highlighted the importance of families, schools, and communities in fostering a culture of disaster preparedness, especially as the Bicol region faces severe weather disturbances in the fourth quarter of the year. He emphasized that preparedness should start at home, where families can develop essential knowledge and skills for responding to disasters.
Fortez noted that schools play a crucial role in reinforcing these skills, allowing students to share their knowledge with their families and communities. He stressed the need for effective early warning systems to ensure timely information reaches communities before disasters occur.
Barangay Dapdap's village chief, Glenn Barcelon, expressed support for the initiative, noting that activities enhancing disaster preparedness improve community readiness. The barangay actively maintains a Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council and conducts regular drills and meetings to update its disaster risk management plans.
The IDDRR's theme, "Panatag na Tahanan at Paaralan," focuses on the role of homes and schools in disaster preparedness, aligning with the Panatag Pilipinas 3.0 campaign aimed at promoting hazard preparedness in schools to build resilience among learners and families. Fortez called for active community participation in disaster risk reduction efforts to protect lives and create safer communities.
