DOH Assures Public of Low Pneumonic Plague Risk in Philippines

Tunis:The Department of Health (DOH) has addressed concerns about pneumonic plague, emphasizing that the Philippines is at a "very low" risk of the disease. This reassurance follows reports of a death in Russia, which has not been confirmed as a pneumonic plague case.

According to Philippines News Agency, DOH Assistant Secretary and spokesperson Tagumpay Maniquis clarified in a Radyo Pilipinas interview that the initial concerns were due to the deceased individual's employment at a research institute focused on infectious diseases. He stated that the World Health Organization's (WHO) latest report did not confirm the presence of pneumonic plague in this case.

Maniquis further explained that the condition is currently classified as pneumonia of unknown origin, with no recorded cases of pneumonic plague. He emphasized the importance of relying on official announcements from the DOH and WHO rather than unverified social media reports. The Bureau of Quarantine and the Epidemiology Bureau are continuing to monitor the situation.

Additionally, Maniquis discussed preparations for a potential severe El Niño event. The DOH has distributed health information materials to public hospitals and Centers for Health Development, highlighting risks such as dehydration, heat-related illnesses, and exacerbation of respiratory conditions due to extreme heat and dusty conditions. There is also a concern about water shortages leading to gastroenteritis and typhoid, with dengue remaining a significant health issue.

Maniquis advised the public to stay hydrated by drinking eight to ten glasses of water daily, wear lightweight clothing, and use umbrellas or other protection against direct sunlight.
