Japan: Japan is extending continuous support to the Philippines' post-earthquake response through the provision of satellite imagery, the Japanese Embassy in Manila said Tuesday. A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Maasim, Sarangani on June 8, killing 65 and causing massive damage to properties in the province and nearby areas.
According to Philippines News Agency, since June 9, the Japanese Embassy said the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has been providing emergency observation and satellite images of the situation in southern Mindanao. 'Japan will continue to work closely with the Philippines to support its early recovery from the damages caused by the earthquake,' it said.
The images provided were taken by JAXA's Advanced Land Observing Satellite-2/4 through the international cooperation framework of Sentinel Asia. Sentinel Asia was established in 2006 by the Asia-Pacific Regional Space Agency Forum (APRSAF) as a global framework that allows the sharing of images from Earth observation satellites and other sources in the event of a disaster.
The APRSAF, led by Japan, with JAXA serving as the secretariat, is composed of 127 space and disaster management organizations.
