Manila: The Senate impeachment court has assumed control over the handling and distribution of financial records in the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte. The documents, submitted by various financial institutions in response to subpoenas, are now under the supervision of the court.
According to Philippines News Agency, presiding officer Francis 'Chiz' Escudero has instructed the subpoenaed banks, insurers, and investment firms to deliver their compliance documents directly to the court's clerk. The clerk is responsible for ensuring that identical copies of these records are distributed to both the prosecution and defense teams. Escudero emphasized that the court, rather than the institutions, will manage the distribution of the documents.
Escudero also directed the clerk of court to verify that both digital and hard copies provided by the financial institutions are consistent with those retained by the court. Some institutions failed to organize their submissions into three separate sets for the court, prosecution, and defense, necessitating additional sorting by the court staff.
Documents have been submitted by institutions including BDO Life, BDO Securities, FWD Life, Pru Life, BPI AIA, Alliance, Asia United Bank, EastWest Bank, and the Philippine National Bank (PNB). PNB and UnionBank have provided partial compliance and requested more time, as did Manulife. These requests were approved by Escudero until September 8, with the possibility of further extensions if necessary.
First Union Plans Inc. informed the court of its dissolution as of December 31, 2025, and confirmed that no plans or accounts associated with the subpoena were maintained prior to its dissolution. Escudero expressed the court's intention to provide both parties with the complete set of digital and hard-copy financial records within the week.
