Ilocos norte: The Ilocos Norte provincial government is advocating for the introduction of direct flights between Laoag City and Kaohsiung, Taiwan, aiming to enhance tourism and economic ties.

According to Philippines News Agency, provincial tourism officer Aianree Raquel has indicated ongoing efforts to secure an agreement that will position Ilocos Norte as a prime destination for Taiwanese travelers and business professionals. Raquel emphasized the continuous efforts initiated by former Governor and current Vice Governor Matthew Joseph Manotoc to attract more tourists and investors by improving transport connectivity in the province.

Raquel highlighted that a direct flight from Kaohsiung International Airport to Laoag International Airport takes approximately an hour, presenting an attractive opportunity to draw Taiwanese tourists to Ilocos Norte. In the 1990s and 2000s, Laoag International Airport regularly received Chinese and Taiwanese tourists on chartered flights from Guangzhou and Kaohsiung. However, these flights ceased in 2010 due to security concerns and other issues.

The Ilocos Norte Tourism Office is reportedly strengthening its network, particularly with local travel agencies, to prepare for a potential increase in visitors. Raquel stated that under President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s administration, with a more stable trade and tourism market, the province is targeting the East Asia market. The aim is to promote Ilocos Norte for cultural and educational exchanges and as an ideal destination for family and business trips.
