Manila: PLDT kicked off its title-retention bid with a 25-23, 25-15, 26-28, 25-14 victory over EST Cola of Thailand in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Invitational at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Monday. Reigning PVL MVP Savi Davison scored 30 points on 24 attacks, five blocks, and one ace for the High Speed Hitters, dominating the fourth set to seal the win in one hour and 47 minutes.
According to Philippines News Agency, Mika Aireen Reyes contributed 13 points with 10 attacks and six blocks, while Jovelyn Grace Prado added nine points alongside 21 digs and 13 receptions. Kim Kiana Dy and Mary Joy Baron also played crucial roles, chipping in eight and seven points, respectively.
PLDT outperformed the Thai team in attacks (60-42) and blocks (14-11). Setter Kim Fajardo delivered 29 excellent sets, surpassing her counterpart Natnicha Saelao by eight. The High Speed Hitters also registered six service aces, conceding only two, and capitalized on opponent errors, scoring 25 points from them compared to the 21 they conceded.
Leading EST Cola, Nirarach Srikuta scored 14 points on 10 attacks and four aces. Nannaphat Moonjakham made significant contributions with 12 points, including 10 attacks. Skipper Hantima Aekpatcha secured eight points, followed by Supawadee Panwilai and Papatchaya Phontham, each with six points.
Looking ahead, PLDT is set to face Nxled at 1:30 p.m., while EST Cola aims for a comeback against Farm Fresh at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
