Heroism Redefined: OPAPRU Chief Highlights Peace as Modern Heroism

Manila: Heroism in modern times is about creating conditions that help peace to take root, Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity (OPAPRU) Secretary Mel Senen Sarmiento emphasized. Speaking on Monday, Sarmiento stressed that today's heroes are those who contribute to establishing a lasting peace.

According to Philippines News Agency, Sarmiento stated, "Today, the meaning of heroism has evolved. To be a hero in these modern times requires us not only to stand on the front lines. Instead, we are called to help create the conditions where genuine peace can firmly take root and flourish." His comments were made in conjunction with the commemoration of National Heroes Day.

Sarmiento elaborated on the shared goals of peace-building and heroism, explaining that fostering peace paves the way for economic opportunity, social justice, and community empowerment. This, he noted, creates a brighter future for every Filipino family and must be cultivated in the hearts and minds of the Filipino youth.

He emphasized the importance of celebrating young peacebuilders and leaders who are bringing peace and development to the nation. "When young educators teach in conflict-ridden areas, when youth entrepreneurs invest in marginalized communities, and when emerging local leaders bridge cultural divides, they turn the promise of peace into tangible progress," Sarmiento stated.

In a separate statement, Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. urged Filipinos to remember the bravery and love demonstrated by national heroes. He highlighted their sacrifices as an inspiration to face current challenges and assured that the DND and Armed Forces of the Philippines are committed to maintaining the freedom, peace, and well-being of all Filipinos.
