Manila: Around 7 million power consumers are experiencing outages due to Typhoon Tino (Kalmaegi), prompting Energy Secretary Sharon Garin to appeal for understanding while assuring that restoration efforts are underway. Personnel from energy-related government agencies and distribution utilities (DUs) are working diligently despite challenges posed by flooding.
According to Philippines News Agency, Garin emphasized the importance of considering the safety of field personnel while aiming for the full restoration of power in typhoon-affected areas. She expressed optimism that power could be restored within hours or days, with ongoing efforts to address issues with distribution lines.
Energy Undersecretary Willam Fuentebella noted during the same briefing that there is a sufficient supply of power and fuel in the affected regions, but the primary obstacle is the unavailability of transmission lines. He highlighted that 99% of facilities are operational, ensuring the availability of gasoline, diesel, and LPG.
The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) reported the restoration of two lines: the Compostela-Consolacion 69kV Line, serving the Cebu II Electric Cooperative (CEBECO II), and the Bacolod-San Enrique 69kV Line, which services the Negros Electric and Power Corporation (NEPC) and the Negros Occidental Electric Cooperative (NOCECO). Additionally, two lines are partially energized, while two others remain unavailable.
NGCP has mobilized line crews, conducting patrols and simultaneous restoration activities in accessible areas to expedite the process.
