Gatchalian Supports NBI’s Move to Collaborate with Interpol Against Overseas Fake News Spreaders

Manila: Senator Sherwin Gatchalian has expressed his full support for the National Bureau of Investigation’s (NBI) initiative to collaborate with the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) in tracking down Filipinos allegedly disseminating fake news from abroad. Gatchalian emphasized the importance of these efforts, stating that the law’s reach now extends beyond national borders and that those responsible should be brought back to the Philippines to face legal consequences.

According to Philippines News Agency, NBI Director Jaime Santiago confirmed that the agency is actively coordinating with Interpol to target individuals overseas accused of spreading disinformation. Santiago noted the legal challenges of this initiative, particularly in countries such as the United States, where libel is considered a civil matter rather than a criminal offense.

Gatchalian issued a warning to those involved in online misinformation, urging them to reconsider their actions. He stated that those spreading fake news have nowhere to hide, as authorities are determined to hold them accountable, even if they operate from overseas. The senator highlighted the harmful effects of disinformation, noting its potential to damage reputations, influence public opinion, and pose threats to national security.
