Manila: Senatorial aspirant Francis Leo Antonio Marcos on Thursday announced his withdrawal from the May 12 midterm elections, citing concerns over the financial burden on the government for printing ballots that would include his name.

According to Philippines News Agency, Marcos, who had secured a temporary restraining order (TRO) from the Supreme Court against his disqualification earlier this week, personally delivered his Statement of Withdrawal to the Law Department of the Commission of Elections (Comelec). He expressed his concerns about the PHP132 million cost associated with printing new ballots, following remarks by Comelec Chairman George Garcia.

Marcos stated, “When I heard Chairman Garcia’s statement that the government will spend PHP132 million just for the printing of new ballots, if I have love for the country I should show how to be of help.” He emphasized his desire not to be the cause of unnecessary government expenditure, adding, “There are still many more elections, I am formally withdrawing my candidacy. This is it.”

In a plea to his supporters, Marcos urged them to back the candidacy of his relative, presidential sister and reelectionist Senator Imee Marcos. “As for my supporters, they know that I love them. Another reason why I withdrew my candidacy to give way to the candidacy of Sen. Imee Marcos. I call on my supporters, that we support Sen. Imee,” he stated.

When questioned about any external influence on his decision, Marcos clarified, “There was none, I didn’t talk to anyone. My principle is not for sale.” This withdrawal follows the Supreme Court’s issuance of a TRO against Comelec’s decision to declare him a nuisance candidate.
