Follow Guidelines on Religious Images’ Vestments, Caretakers Urged

Dumaguete: Caretakers and artisans of religious images are once again busy with the upcoming processions marking the observance of the Holy Week. But with the preparations comes a reminder: follow guidelines.

According to Philippines News Agency, Msgr. Julius Perpetuo Heruela, head of the Committee on Church Cultural Heritage of the Diocese of Dumaguete, emphasized the importance of adhering to the Catholic Church’s guidelines for vesting religious images. He highlighted that the “camareros,” or caretakers, should pay attention to details like the color of garments during religious events, particularly the Holy Week.

The term “camareros” refers to those involved in preparing and maintaining religious images used in processions. Heruela pointed out that the garments of saints vary depending on the occasion. During the Good Friday Procession of the Passion of Our Lord, the Mater Dolorosa should be dressed in black with a mournful expression, while during the “Sugat” procession, she should wear white and have a joyful demeanor.

For Ralph Anthony Cordova Insertado, a long-serving “camarero” at the Dumaguete Cathedral Parish, the role is both “enlightening and inspiring.” Insertado, who started participating in his family’s tradition of maintaining religious images at 19, has been a full-time “camarero” since 2015. He maintains a collection of religious images, including life-size ones from Spain, which he uses for various religious celebrations.

Marc Clifford Calumpang, a “recamadero,” designs and sews garments for religious images. He began providing vestments during the Covid-19 pandemic, emphasizing the importance of choosing appropriate garments for specific occasions. Calumpang sources materials from online platforms and stores outside the province.

Recently, the National Heritage Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) conducted a forum in Bacong, Negros Oriental, focusing on the proper upkeep and vesting of religious images. Rommel Aquino from the NHCP highlighted the role of “camareros” as educators on Christ’s redemptive grace and emphasized the preservation of the religious heritage related to the Lenten season.

Heruela also stressed the importance of proper handling, storage, and preservation of sacred images. He lamented that traditional practices are being lost and non-conforming practices are emerging. He noted that even the “carrozas” used in processions are often neglected, exposed to the elements, which undermines their historic value.
