DOLE Announces Double Pay for Maundy Thursday and Good Friday Workers

Manila: Private sector workers who are scheduled to work on April 17 (Maundy Thursday) and April 18 (Good Friday) are entitled to receive double their regular pay for these days. In an advisory issued on Wednesday, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) emphasized the importance of adhering to the correct wage computation for these regular holidays.

According to Philippines News Agency, DOLE outlined that employers are required to pay 200 percent of an employee’s standard wage for the first eight hours of work on these holidays. If an employee works beyond eight hours, they will earn an additional 30 percent of their hourly rate for the overtime hours worked.

Employees working on a regular holiday that coincides with their rest day will also receive an additional 30 percent of their basic wage calculated at 200 percent. For those working beyond eight hours on such a day, the overtime pay would include an additional 30 percent on top of the regular overtime rate.

DOLE further clarified that employees who do not work on these holidays are still entitled to receive 100 percent of their wage for the day, provided they report to work or are on paid leave the day before the holiday. If the day before the holiday is a non-working day or a rest day for the employee, holiday pay is still applicable if the employee was present or on paid leave the day prior.

For April 19 (Black Saturday), the “no work, no pay” policy is in effect unless company agreements provide otherwise. However, if an employee works on this day, they are entitled to an additional 30 percent of their basic wage for the first eight hours. If working overtime, they will receive an additional 30 percent for those hours. If the special day falls on an employee’s rest day, they will receive 50 percent extra pay for the first eight hours, with increased overtime rates as specified.
