Estrada Seeks Global Support for Philippines’ UN Security Council Bid

Tashkent: Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Ejercito Estrada called on fellow lawmakers across the world to support the Philippines’ bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for 2027-2028. The country previously held a non-permanent seat on the UNSC in 1957, 1963, 1980-1981, and 2004-2005.

According to Philippines News Agency, Estrada made his plea during the ASEAN+3 meeting at the 150th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. He emphasized the Philippines’ dedication to peaceful dispute resolution, multilateral cooperation, and regional stability.

Estrada highlighted the nation’s legacy as the first Asian republic and a founding UN member, portraying the Philippines as a reliable partner and committed peacemaker. He stated, “We are committed to upholding the rule of law and to collaborating with the international community in tackling global challenges.” This current bid aligns with the Philippines’ commitment to enhancing multilateralism and contributing to global peace.

As a developing nation, Estrada believes the Philippines can serve as an example for smaller countries striving for peaceful conflict resolution and diplomatic engagement. He underscored the nation’s advocacy for international law, particularly the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), in resolving territorial disputes. He noted that Manila’s candidacy mirrors its dedication to peace, justice, and active participation in global governance.

Estrada urged his counterparts, “The Philippines aims to amplify the voices of developing nations in international decision-making processes.” He appealed to them, “As representatives of your governments, I appeal to each of you to support the Philippines’ candidacy. Let us work together toward a future where collaboration and mutual respect guide our actions.”
