Manila: As the national government intensifies its operations to support localities affected by the 7.8 magnitude earthquake in southern Mindanao, Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Rex Gatchalian highlighted the importance of implementing a whole-of-nation approach to assist evacuees.
According to Philippines News Agency, Secretary Gatchalian emphasized President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive for a comprehensive national strategy. While the DSWD focuses on relief, food, and immediate recovery through cash assistance, other agencies such as the National Housing Authority (NHA) and the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) are engaged in housing and reconstruction efforts. The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) is contributing through cash-for-work programs, providing a collaborative effort that significantly aids affected communities.
The DSWD chief underscored the collaborative efforts of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and the Department of Health (DOH) in disaster response operations. The DPWH is responsible for road clearing to facilitate the delivery of relief goods, while the DOH is not only addressing medical needs but also providing psychosocial support.
To support the DOH, the DSWD is offering Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Services, including therapeutic storytelling, art sessions, play therapy, and other activities aimed at creating a safe environment for children affected by the disaster.
Based on a report from the Disaster Response Operations Management, Information and Communication, the DSWD has provided over PHP124.9 million in humanitarian assistance to displaced families in Region 9 (Zamboanga Peninsula), Region 11 (Davao Region), and Region 12 (Soccsksargen). Nearly 153,000 family food packs (FFPs) have been distributed to calamity victims.
In the same radio interview, Secretary Gatchalian mentioned his request to local chief executives of the affected areas to promptly submit lists of affected constituents. This step aims to expedite the distribution of emergency cash transfer (ECT) aid, which is intended to meet immediate needs and provide livelihood opportunities for affected families. Gatchalian assured that ECT distribution would occur across all earthquake-affected areas.
