Pasig City:The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is set to initiate the C5 rehabilitation project later this month, as announced by DPWH Secretary Giovanni Lopez. The announcement was made during an inspection of the newly reopened Pasig Boulevard-C5 Flyover in Bagong Ilog, Pasig City.
According to Philippines News Agency, the rehabilitation of C5 is scheduled to begin in the last week of November, following a plan similar to the EDSA rehabilitation approach. The post-qualification phase of the bidding process is currently in progress, with the Notice of Award expected by November 16, and the Notice to Proceed anticipated a week later if no procurement issues arise.
The project will focus on expanding sidewalks to accommodate pedestrians and cyclists, spanning approximately 23 kilometers from the Kalayaan Interchange to Commonwealth Avenue. The funding for the C5 rehab comes from savings generated from the EDSA rehab, with the original budget of PHP17 billion reduced to PHP6 billion under Secretary Vince Dizon's leadership.
Coordination with the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and local government units is ongoing to manage traffic during the phased construction. The project is set to last 420 calendar days, with work hours from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m., aiming for completion by the last week of January 2028. The DPWH aims to minimize public disruption through careful planning and a 'work on what is workable' approach.
Traffic on the Pasig Blvd-C5 Flyover is now smoother after the northbound lane opened ahead of schedule at noon on Monday, followed by the southbound lane at midnight on Tuesday. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered the immediate opening to ease travel post-Undas for motorists and commuters.
