Manila: Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla announced that up to 200 individuals nationwide may face charges in relation to irregular flood control projects. This group reportedly includes at least 60 congressmen, alongside contractors and officials from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

According to Philippines News Agency, Remulla indicated that the law provides several remedies, though specifics were not disclosed as the department is still determining the best approach to handle the cases. The investigation has revealed 67 instances of proven conflicts of interest within Congress, which are under close scrutiny to address the issue comprehensively.

Remulla noted that long-standing corruption in government contracts has intensified the situation. He mentioned that it is widely known in Congress that many members are also contractors, a practice that is prohibited. Despite this, there has been a lack of enforcement, leading to a disregard for legal boundaries.

The Justice Secretary also stated that they are examining allegations of prohibited interests concerning the family of current senators Mark and Camille Villar. Remulla specified that reports suggest a contractor, who is a first cousin to the senators, is involved, highlighting the necessity of substantiating these claims beyond media reports to build a solid case.
