DOH Urges Safe Holiday Practices to Prevent Firework Injuries

BAGUIO CITY: The Department of Health’s (DOH) Cordillera office has reiterated its call for safe holiday celebrations, urging the public to prioritize health and safety as the New Year approaches. The department emphasized the importance of avoiding firecrackers and pyrotechnics to prevent injuries.

According to Philippines News Agency, Jef Tamongdong, the health education and promotion officer for DOH-Cordillera, emphasized the significance of safety in holiday celebrations during an online briefing. Tamongdong highlighted the department’s advocacy for the season, advising people to refrain from lighting firecrackers and instead attend public fireworks displays organized by local government units (LGUs) to minimize the risk of harm.

DOH data revealed that the region recorded 40 fireworks-related injuries and one stray bullet incident between December 21, 2023, and January 6 of this year, marking a 78 percent increase compared to the same period the previous year. The majority of injuries were associated wi
th the use of ‘kwitis’ (skyrocket), ‘boga’ (homemade bomb using PVC), whistlebomb, “labintador,” and ‘lusis.’

In addition to firework safety, Tamongdong reiterated the advice of health authorities to use alternative noise-makers, such as trumpets, which achieve the same celebratory effect without causing harm. She further advised the public to maintain a healthy diet during the holiday season, suggesting that while simple and healthy food is preferable, moderation and avoiding fatty parts can also be beneficial.

Tamongdong also urged motorists to ensure safe travel by adhering to the BLOWBAGETS checklist, which involves checking the car’s battery, light, oil, water, brakes, air, gas, engine, tires, and self, to ensure vehicle safety.
