DOH Expands Leptospirosis Fast Lanes to 49 Hospitals Nationwide

Manila: The Department of Health (DOH) has significantly increased the number of leptospirosis fast lanes in hospitals across the nation, expanding from 27 to 49 facilities. This initiative is in response to the ongoing threat of leptospirosis as the country grapples with rising cases of the waterborne bacterial infection, especially following recent flooding.

According to Philippines News Agency, the initiative follows a directive from President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., emphasizing the need to address the health concern promptly and effectively. The goal of the leptospirosis fast lanes is to provide quicker diagnosis, treatment, and medical attention to patients exhibiting symptoms. These designated areas within hospitals streamline the admission and treatment process for suspected cases, including laboratory testing, antibiotic administration, and supportive care.

The hospitals equipped with leptospirosis fast lanes include major facilities such as San Lorenzo Ruiz General Hospital, East Avenue Medical Center, Quirino Memorial Medical Center, and many others spread across different regions. This strategic distribution aims to ensure widespread access to necessary medical interventions.

DOH Spokesperson Albert Domingo commented on the situation, suggesting that leptospirosis cases might not see a further rise. Recent data indicate a plateau in daily cases, hinting that the country could have surpassed the incubation period, which ranges from two to 30 days. Typically, cases increase one to two weeks after flooding events.

The DOH recorded 2,396 leptospirosis cases from June 8 to August 7, 2025, a period marked by the onset of the rainy season as declared by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration.
