Iloilo city: Energy Undersecretary Giovanni Carlo Bacordo has called on Ilonggos to become leaders in the quest for energy independence, emphasizing that the government cannot achieve energy security without the active participation of every Filipino.
According to Philippines News Agency, during the 128th Independence Day celebration in Iloilo City, Bacordo highlighted the importance of economic and energy independence for future generations, drawing parallels to the historical fight for political freedom. He noted that the Philippines continues to face significant challenges in energy security due to its heavy reliance on imported fuel.
Bacordo outlined the nation's dependency on imported petroleum products for transportation, as well as on electricity generated from imported coal and natural gas for households. He also pointed out the critical role of fuel in agriculture, which supports many Ilonggo communities.
He praised Iloilo City as a "shining example" of why energy security is crucial, citing the city's economic achievements, including a thriving business process outsourcing sector, vibrant local enterprises, and award-winning urban planning and heritage preservation.
Bacordo encouraged Ilonggos to champion energy independence by adopting energy efficiency and conservation practices, supporting electric vehicles, and embracing local renewable energy projects. He stressed that every step towards harnessing indigenous power and reducing reliance on foreign oil represents a modern declaration of independence.
He invoked the courage and unity demonstrated by past generations, urging contemporary Ilonggos to help build a stronger, more resilient, and energy-secure Philippines. Bacordo assured that the Department of Energy (DOE) is committed to accelerating investments in renewable energy projects nationwide to enhance the share of clean and indigenous energy.
By the end of 2025, Bacordo noted, the country aims to have 1,366 active renewable energy projects with an installed capacity of 7.85 gigawatts (GW) and a potential capacity of 139.84 GW. Additionally, the Green Energy Auctions are set to deliver 25GW installed capacities by 2035.
The DOE also promotes energy efficiency and conservation programs, advocating for better building standards, modern technologies, and responsible consumption habits to reduce energy demand and lower costs. Bacordo emphasized the importance of modernizing the transportation sector through electric vehicles, alternative fuels, and cleaner technologies.
