DFA Hits China for Endangering PCG Vessel in WPS, Urges Dialogue

Manila: The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Tuesday afternoon criticized China over its latest ‘unlawful interference’ with routine Philippine operations in the Bajo de Masinloc, also known as the Scarborough Shoal, resulting in the collision of its own vessels on Monday.

According to Philippines News Agency, DFA Spokesperson Angelica Escalano stated that the dangerous maneuvers conducted by the ships-People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) ship 164 and the China Coast Guard (CCG) ship 3104-posed grave danger to both Philippine personnel and vessels. The Department expressed serious concern over these actions, which interfered with a routine humanitarian operation for Filipino fisherfolk in the territorial sea of Bajo de Masinloc, an integral part of Philippine territory.

Escalano noted that the actions of the Chinese vessels not only endangered Philippine personnel and vessels but also resulted in a collision between the two Chinese vessels. The Philippine government is prepared to work with China to learn from this incident, emphasizing the importance of maritime safety according to international regulations.

She highlighted that Manila has consistently stressed the importance of maritime safety, referencing the 1972 International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS) and the 1974 Safety of Life at Sea Convention (SOLAS). The Philippines intends to utilize diplomacy and dialogue to address differences, aligning with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive for peaceful dispute resolution in the West Philippine Sea.

As the Philippines maintains its presence in the West Philippine Sea, the nation is committed to asserting and protecting its sovereignty, sovereign rights, and jurisdiction in accordance with international law. The incident occurred off the Bajo de Masinloc on Monday morning, with the CCG vessel pursuing BRP Suluan at high speed.

Following the collision, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) promptly provided assistance, including medical aid and towing the damaged ship out of the area. The DFA commended the PCG for its professionalism and seamanship in handling the situation.
