Quezon city: The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the welfare of estero and river rangers, recognizing their crucial role in the rehabilitation of Manila Bay and its tributaries, while expanding programs aimed at improving their health, education, and career opportunities. During the general assembly for estero and river rangers from the National Capital Region (NCR), Central Luzon, and Calabarzon at the agency's central office in Quezon City on Wednesday, Environment Secretary Juan Miguel Cuna described the rangers as the agency's frontline force in restoring rivers, esteros, and other waterways that drain into Manila Bay.
According to Philippines News Agency, Cuna expressed his appreciation for the rangers, calling them the steadfast support, foundation, and strength of the Manila Bay rehabilitation. He acknowledged the significant results of the program, with the DENR hiring approximately 3,618 river rangers in Calabarzon alone since 2020. Over 32.67 million kilos of solid waste have been removed from rivers and waterways, significantly improving the condition of the Manila Bay region.
Cuna highlighted the importance of the river rangers' daily perseverance and dedication in cleaning the waterways across NCR, Central Luzon, and Calabarzon. He emphasized the need to look after the well-being of the rangers, as their work exposes them to health and safety risks.
To address this, the DENR has partnered with stakeholders, including pharmaceutical company Unilab, and the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP). Unilab Inc. conducted medical missions during the event, providing health assessments and consultations for the rangers, ensuring they receive necessary medical attention.
Cuna also revealed plans to explore additional health assistance, such as providing vitamins and wellness support through partnerships. He encouraged river rangers to pursue further studies through the PUP Open University System, emphasizing the DENR's commitment to their development and well-being.
