Manila: As the holiday season approaches and Christmas lights begin to adorn various spaces, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-National Capital Region (DENR-NCR) has issued a public advisory urging citizens to reconsider the common practice of wrapping Christmas lights around trees.
According to Philippines News Agency, the advisory was communicated through a Facebook post by the DENR-NCR, highlighting the potential harm such decorations can cause to trees. The post elaborates that while decorative lights may enhance the festive atmosphere, they can also cause significant damage. “Wrapping lights around trees can snag branches and trees. Wires and plastic get stuck, which can cause wounds to the tree and possibly lead to infection or death,” the post stated.
The DENR-NCR expressed additional concerns that the bright lights from Christmas decorations can disturb the natural activities of wildlife, including birds and insects, that use trees as their habitat. Furthermore, the agency pointed out that improper setups and tangled wires elevate the risk of accidental fires during the busy holiday season.
Highlighting the importance of environmental conservation, the DENR-NCR reminded the public that Christmas is an opportunity to express love not just for family and friends but for nature as well. Although there is no specific legislation prohibiting the use of Christmas lights on trees, the advisory serves as a preventive measure to safeguard urban greenery and community safety.
The agency encouraged residents to explore creative and eco-friendly alternatives for holiday decorations, such as illuminating homes and streets without jeopardizing the well-being of urban trees. “This Christmas season, show love not only to others but also to nature. Avoid putting Christmas lights on trees to prevent accidents, fires, and damage to our urban greenery,” the advisory concluded.
