Davao city: The Department of Health in Davao Region (DOH-11) reminded the public on Thursday to take precautionary measures against the effects of haze linked to wildfires in Indonesia. Haze is polluted air containing a mixture of smoke, dust, and ash from fires.
According to Philippines News Agency, in a public advisory, DOH-11 stated that possible effects include difficulty in breathing, coughing, chest pain, watery and irritated eyes and nose, and worsening of respiratory diseases like asthma. To prevent health risks from haze, it urged residents to stay indoors as much as possible, keep doors and windows closed, and wear an N95 mask when going outside.
"If visibility is poor, use headlights or fog lights and drive with caution. If you need emergency assistance, call 911 immediately," the agency added. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources - Environmental Management Bureau earlier noted that Calinan in Davao City and Koronadal City in South Cotabato were categorized as "unhealthy for sensitive groups."
Due to the threat of haze and polluted air, DOH-11 noted that road visibility is reduced, urging drivers to remain alert while driving and operating public utility vehicles. "Be cautious when traveling on the road, especially regarding the use of lights and maintaining a safe distance between vehicles to keep every trip safe," the agency added.
