Manila:Abra lone district Rep. JB Bernos has urged local government units (LGUs) to collaborate with academic institutions in the production of electric vehicles (EVs) for public transportation.
According to Philippines News Agency, Bernos emphasized that shifting to EVs is a long-term strategy to reduce dependency on oil and protect the transport sector from external market volatilities. He believes state universities and colleges (SUCs) have the capability to produce market-ready EVs, and that they need opportunities to showcase their capabilities with the help of LGUs.
Bernos highlighted that LGUs can utilize the expertise of academic institutions to comply with Republic Act 11697, the Electric Vehicles Industry Development Act (EVIDA Law), which mandates a transition of at least 5 percent of LGUs' vehicle fleets to EVs. Additionally, the law requires LGUs to create dedicated EV lanes and streamline permits for EV charging stations.
Furthermore, Bernos stated that engaging local EV designers and producers could boost the local economy by creating manufacturing opportunities and green jobs. He also noted the environmental benefits of EVs, including reduced greenhouse gas emissions and improved air quality.
In addition to advocating for electric vehicles, Bernos supports the shift to solar energy for reducing operational costs. His proposed House of Representatives Bill 3126, the On-Grid Solar Energy Systems bill, seeks to establish solar energy systems in all government-owned buildings to cut electricity expenses.
