Churches Mobilize as Shelters for Super Typhoon Uwan Evacuees

Manila: Churches across Metro Manila and the Bicol Region have been instructed to open their doors to individuals displaced by Super Typhoon Uwan, known internationally as Fung-wong, which continues to batter Luzon with intense rainfall and strong winds.

According to Philippines News Agency, the Catholic Church, through its archdioceses and dioceses, has mobilized its network of parishes and institutions to serve as temporary shelters for evacuees. On Sunday, the Archdiocese of Manila, Archdiocese of Caceres, Diocese of Kalookan, and Diocese of Virac issued directives for all their parishes, schools, and church facilities to welcome those seeking refuge.

The Archdiocese of Caceres has called for preparation and mutual care amidst the typhoon’s onslaught, emphasizing the need for co-responsibility during these challenging times. In Catanduanes, one of the first areas to be hit by the super typhoon, the Diocese of Virac has directed priests to make parish churches available as safe havens for affected families.

The Bicol Region is under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 5, while Metro Manila is under Signal No. 3, as per the latest advisory from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA). In response, the Archdiocese of Manila has encouraged institutions with available safe spaces to provide shelter to those impacted by the typhoon.

Similarly, the Diocese of Kalookan has urged its parishes to open their facilities, reinforcing the message of trust in divine care during times of adversity.

Caritas Philippines, affiliated with the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, is actively monitoring the situation. They have started coordinating with diocesan social action centers to facilitate emergency response efforts, urging the community to stay vigilant and heed local government advisories.
