Cebu Cop Killer Surrenders in Metro Manila

Pasig city: A suspect in the killing of a police officer from the Philippine National Police – Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG) in Cebu City surrendered at a Pasig City police station on Wednesday night. In a phone interview on Thursday, Col. Hendrix Mangaldan, Pasig City police chief, stated that the suspect, known by the alias Jun, arrived at the station around 8 p.m. accompanied by two Pasig City councilors who facilitated his surrender.

According to Philippines News Agency, the suspect decided to surrender due to the pressure from the nationwide manhunt operation against him. Jun fled to Metro Manila after the killing of Capt. Joel Deiparine, assistant chief of the Intelligence Section of the PNP-CIDG Regional Field Unit 7. The incident occurred during casing and surveillance operations against gun-for-hire suspects in Barangay Suldon 2 in Cebu City last Saturday, which also resulted in Executive Master Sergeant Artchel Tero being wounded.

The suspect was transferred to Cebu after his surrender to face the charges filed against him. Brig. Gen. Redrico Maranan, Police Regional Office – Central Visayas (PRO-7) chief, noted that a tracker team confirmed Jun’s presence in the eastern part of Metro Manila, after he reportedly initiated contact through a ‘surrender feeler.’ Maranan confirmed that Jun admitted to shooting the policemen during the surveillance operation.

PNP-CIDG Director, Maj. Gen. Robert Alexander Morico II, revealed that seven suspects were involved in the incident, with three, including Jun, currently in police custody. Morico stated that the suspects had seven firearms, consisting of five short firearms and two long firearms, and an ongoing operation is in place to recover them. He also addressed suspicions of connections between some suspects and two councilors and the Pasig Police, indicating that these relationships would be investigated.

During the same press briefing, Morico confirmed that the CIDG is preparing to file complaints against over 40 individuals allegedly involved in the violent incidents during the 21 September rally in Manila. These individuals include alleged financiers and instigators, although specific charges were not disclosed. Morico emphasized that the investigation aims to ensure accountability and prevent similar incidents in the future.
