Cebu: The Archdiocese of Cebu has announced a halt on the use of churches in regions impacted by the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck Cebu on Tuesday night. In an official advisory, the archdiocese instructed priests to avoid entering churches in the affected areas to ensure safety.

According to Philippines News Agency, the advisory specifically addressed parishes in the northern parts that experienced significant impact from the quake. It urged them to cease using church facilities for Holy Mass celebrations until further notice. This decision is part of a broader effort to ensure the safety of congregants and church personnel.

Cebu Archbishop Alberto Uy has mandated a structural assessment for all churches and rectories within the jurisdiction. The archdiocese emphasized the importance of refraining from using church properties until experts have conducted thorough evaluations and confirmed their safety for public use.

In addition to the precautionary measures, the Archdiocese of Cebu has extended prayers for those affected by the disaster. The archdiocese expressed solidarity with the victims, praying for their safety, protection, and peace of mind during these challenging times. It also offered prayers for the damaged churches in northern Cebu, recognizing their historical and spiritual significance as places of hope and refuge.

The earthquake, which had its epicenter approximately 21 kilometers northeast of Bogo City, resulted in significant casualties. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported on Wednesday that at least 26 individuals lost their lives due to the tremor.
