Manila: Classes at all levels in public and private schools remain suspended Monday as the city government extended the measure due to the dangerously high heat index. Schools have been closed since last week as the city continues to endure extreme heat conditions.
According to Philippines News Agency, "Schools are encouraged to use other learning modalities, such as asynchronous or synchronous methods," the city government said. Officials stressed that the extension aims to safeguard students, with the heat index expected to reach 43°C on Monday - a level classified as "danger."
The city government also reminded residents to stay alert to rising temperatures and practice safety measures. "Always drink water regularly, avoid prolonged exposure to heat, especially during peak hours, wear light and loose clothing, and refrain from excessive physical activity during the hottest part of the day," the advisory said.
Residents were further urged to seek immediate rest in cool areas and medical help if they experience dizziness, headache, weakness, or other heat-related symptoms. Similar suspensions and alternative learning modalities are being implemented in other towns and cities across the region due to the high heat index.
Meanwhile, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) in Agusan del Sur issued its own advisory Monday, urging residents to stay hydrated and limit sun exposure. The PDRRMO reported that Bayugan City and the towns of Esperanza, Prosperidad, and San Francisco may experience heat indices of 41°C to 44°C; Rosario, Bunawan, and Trento may reach 40°C to 43°C; while La Paz and Talacogon could hit 42°C to 45°C.
"Keep updated with the latest advisories and information on the prevailing heat index in your localities for your safety," the PDRRMO said.
