Black Nazarene Devotees Encouraged to Pray for the Philippines

Manila: An official of the Minor Basilica and National Shrine of Jesus Nazareno, commonly known as Quiapo Church, has called on devotees to enhance their devotion by praying not only for themselves but also for the nation. ‘This is the time for us to deepen our devotion, level up our understanding of this devotion … We just want to raise the consciousness of the Filipino people that devotion is being a good Filipino,’ Fr. Jade Licuanan, rector of Quiapo Church, said in a press conference at Pope Benedict XVI Building on Monday.

According to Philippines News Agency, Fr. Licuanan emphasized that being a good Catholic should go hand in hand with being a good Filipino. He noted that if devotees only focus on personal desires, they have not yet reached maturity in their faith. True devotion, he argued, includes love for the country. He also highlighted that the annual feast of the Black Nazarene on January 9 should inspire people to serve others.

He pointed out that the Traslacion should lead to a commitment to service, suggesting that the Nazareno would not be satisfied otherwise. ‘We are all called to reach out and take care of each other, especially these times. Devotion is just the first level. It’s not enough. We have to go through the process until we reach public service and the mission,’ Licuanan stated.

Fr. Licuanan also urged devotees to refrain from climbing the andas (carriage) during the annual traslacion procession, to ensure that everyone can see the image of the Nazareno. ‘The more we see Poong Jesus Nazareno, even if it takes 24 hours, as long as we all see Him, that’s okay. It is really important to elevate Jesus Nazareno and not be covered up,’ he added.

Nazareno 2026 spokesperson Fr. Robert Arellano appealed to procession participants to maintain order and avoid causing disturbances. ‘Our call is that our goal is to be holy … So our call is to help each other and follow the rules of the church. To those who dare to cause trouble, please don’t because it won’t help,’ he said, emphasizing the importance of safety for all involved.

Manila Mayor Isko Moreno, also present at the press conference, announced that vendors would not be permitted near Quiapo Church from January 7 to 9. The 10-day celebration is set to begin on December 31 and conclude on the actual feast day.
