Bicol’s 6 iHubs Serve as One-Stop Shops for Startups, Innovations

Bicol: The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has established Innovation Hubs (iHubs) in six provinces of the Bicol region, dedicated spaces aimed at nurturing innovation and empowering startups. In an interview, DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. said the hubs foster innovation by supporting market-responsive, community-driven solutions and empowering local stakeholders through science and technology. “If you have an idea, it’s important to take action on it; otherwise, you might miss out on a valuable opportunity. Now, if you have a concept, you can approach the iHubs of DOST,” he said.

According to Philippines News Agency, Solidum emphasized that the iHubs would serve as the initial touchpoint for research and innovations. He explained the process of discussing ideas in collaboration with business professionals or university experts to explore potential avenues for research or business development. The initiative aims to support individuals without advanced degrees alongside those with master’s or PhD qualifications. Following a visit to Canada, Solidum instructed regional operations to establish these innovation hubs.

The iHubs are designed as one-stop shops for creativity and problem-solving, located within the Provincial Science and Technology Office (PSTO) in Bicol’s provinces. The Albay iHub is situated inside the Regional Government Center site in Legazpi City. The Camarines Norte iHub operates within Camarines Norte State College in Daet. In Camarines Sur, the iHub is housed inside the Bicol Science and Technology Centrum in Naga City. The Catanduanes iHub is positioned near Catanduanes State University in Virac. The Masbate iHub is located near Southern Bicol Colleges in Masbate City, and the Sorsogon iHub resides inside Sorsogon State University in Sorsogon City.
