Bacolod city: Mayor Greg Gasataya announced that the city government is collaborating with the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) to seek a presidential proclamation for acquiring government land occupied by informal settlers displaced by a recent fire.

According to Philippines News Agency, the initiative involves coordinating with the Office of the President to facilitate the transfer of the 7,787-square-meter property, currently occupied by 290 families in Purok Acacia I, Cheriza I, and Cheriza II, who lost their homes to a blaze on September 12. The land is owned by the Philippine Alien Property Administration, a U.S. government agency that ceased operations in 1951.

Gasataya explained that the DHSUD would also work with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, responsible for maintaining inventories of patrimonial properties, public and government lands, and related records. The objective is to secure recommendations for a presidential proclamation authorizing the land transfer. The mayor expressed hope for a swift response from the Office of the President if all documentation is in order.

The city government plans to distribute PHP2.865 million in financial aid to the affected families. Specifically, 141 families with completely destroyed homes will receive PHP15,000 each, while one household with a partially damaged structure will obtain PHP10,000. Additionally, 148 families classified as renters and sharers will receive PHP5,000 each.

The DHSUD will provide nearly PHP4.3 million in financial assistance to families with totally and partially damaged houses, which will be disbursed by the national government. This aid is in addition to support from the Department of Social Welfare and Development and other relevant government agencies.
