Manila: The provincial government of Albay has temporarily banned the entry of live hogs, pork, and pork-based products originating from Camarines Sur. This action follows reported cases of African swine fever (ASF) in the neighboring province.

According to Philippines News Agency, Gov. Noel Rosal issued Executive Order No. NER-050, series of 2026, to safeguard Albay's swine industry and prevent the spread of ASF within the province. The decision came after the Department of Agriculture's (DA) regional office in Bicol confirmed ASF cases in Camarines Sur on Aug. 20, with the disease identified in two cities and two municipalities.

The order prohibits the entry of all live hogs, pork products, and other pork-based goods from Camarines Sur into Albay. Any shipments containing these products will be confiscated or sent back. This measure acts as a supplement to Provincial Ordinance No. 0035-2020, aimed at combating African swine fever in Albay.

Albay remains free of ASF, thus prompting provincial authorities to enhance biosecurity and other preventive measures. The DA-Bicol reported ASF cases confirmed in Iriga City, Naga City, and Nabua, Camarines Sur, with laboratory tests conducted at the Regional Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory.

Affected local government units have implemented depopulation, surveillance, and monitoring, while reinforcing biosecurity, sanitation, disinfection, and restrictions on hog movement.

In addition to the temporary ban, the Provincial Task Force for Animal Disease Emergencies will be reconstituted. It is tasked with providing strategic direction, formulating guidelines and advisories for local government units, and monitoring the implementation of disease prevention and control measures.

The task force will also coordinate with local government units, agencies, and stakeholders to offer technical assistance in implementing measures against animal disease emergencies. The Albay Veterinary Office will oversee the implementation of the executive order, adhering to protocols and guidelines set by the DA and its agencies.
