Albay:The provincial government of Albay has assured sustained assistance for families displaced and residing in evacuation centers due to the ongoing unrest of Mayon Volcano. Albay Governor Noel Rosal emphasized the importance of extending support beyond the usual short-term disaster response, acknowledging that the volcanic activity could persist for months, necessitating sustained resources.
According to Philippines News Agency, ongoing changes in the volcano's activity, such as lava movement and ground changes, are being closely monitored. The province is maintaining Alert Level 3 and enforcing a strict prohibition on human activities within the 6-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ).
The provincial government has developed a 15-day assistance plan for affected families, with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) providing food assistance while the province mobilizes medical services and other essential support. The Albay Public Safety and Emergency Management Office (APSEMO) is also prepared to address potential water supply shortages at evacuation centers.
Governor Rosal expressed concern about the possibility of escalating to Alert Level 4, which could necessitate the evacuation of an additional 5,000 to 10,000 families, depending on the expanded size of the danger zone. Despite the unrest, tourism activities outside restricted areas may continue, including conventions and other events.
There is also concern about potential health problems among evacuees if the volcanic unrest coincides with the El Niño phenomenon, particularly heat-related illnesses. The provincial government is monitoring the readiness of its hospitals, ensuring adequate medical supplies, while the Bicol Regional Hospital and Medical Center may offer additional support.
Governor Rosal thanked President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and national government agencies for their ongoing support, which includes food assistance, cash aid, and livelihood opportunities for displaced families and affected farmers. Furthermore, internally displaced persons from Camalig received payouts from DSWD-Bicol's cash-for-work program, providing temporary employment and helping meet immediate needs.
